Khnum is one of the earliest-known Egyptian deities, originally recognized as the god of the source of the Nile. Due to the annual flooding of the Nile bringing life to its surroundings, Khnum was thought to be the creator of human bodies, which he made at a potter's wheel from clay and placed in their mothers' wombs. He was also described ashaving molded the other deities and held the titles "Divine Potter" and "Lord of created things from himself"
